Terminator: TSSC Episode 2.22

So, for what might be the last time here are my comments on a new episode of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

Sarah is in a prison cell being interviewed by an FBI guy who played someone on The West Wing. He asks where John is and Sarah says he is dead. Sara asks to see a priest. It's the same priest from the first episode of the season when they hid in his church and tried to deactivate Cameron. Sarah explains about the terminators and asks for his help.

John and Cameron are hiding in a motel. He is angry at Cameron in case she has been giving off radiation from her power source that has made his mother ill. Cameron gets him to check her power source and it's "cold" which is "good". This is actually a very creepy and uncomfortable scene that requites John to straddle Cameron on the bed.

The priest makes contact with someone who in turn visits John and Cameron. It's the chick who was hanging out with the gang of forgers from the first season. She hands over new passports. John looks for a message from his mother. The girl passes on a message: Don't try to rescue Sarah.

A terminator goes into a gun shop to buy a silencer. (The gun dealer doesn't know how lucky he was to survive.) Later the machine tries to kill Weaver and seems a little confused that bullets didn't do the job. Weaver dispatches him.

Cameron sees Ellison outside and gets him. He says Weaver wants to meet John to thank him for saving the daughter. Ellison passes on a message for Cameron: "Will you join us?" Cameron is momentarily taken aback. This certainly seems to confirm that Weaver is the same T-1000 from the sub in the future.

The guy from The West Wing asks Sarah if she know where Danny Dyson is? Miles Dyson's son has vanished. Is he perhaps the one behind the SkyNet malware that infected Cromartie? Is he working on SkyNet, perhaps against his will?

John and Cameron go to rescue Sarah anyway. Well, Cameron does most of the work. Lots of guards shoot her so shes got that cool exposed endoskeleton look going on. John Henry/Cromartie is watching from his basement room and unlocks all the doors. Sarah escapes and is reunited with John and Cameron.

John and Sarah go to visit Weaver. Meanwhile Cameron breaks in to the basement to supposedly destroy John Henry.

While John and Sarah talk to Weaver one of the drone aircraft from an earlier episode flies into Weaver's building and explodes. Weaver turns into a metal wall to protect them. They run to the basement to discover Cromartie is gone and Cameron is in his place. She has given Cromartie her chip.

Sarah recognizes the Turk computer which has, surprise, three red dots on it. Weaver says she is not developing SkyNet but rather a means of combating SkyNet. So it does appear that there is a faction of machines who for some reason want to prevent SkyNet winning the war.

Weaver activates a time displacement "bubble" sending herself and John into the future. John is quickly discovered by members of the resistance including none other than Derek Reese, his father Kyle Reese and Alison, the girl who looks like Cameron. Not only do they not recognise John, they don't appear to know the name "John Connor". Does this imply they've not met him yet, or that by jumping into the future there has been no John Conner around since the war started?

This was a very strong episode with a great cliffhanger. I love time travel paradox stuff so this is great. Every time someone jumps back or forward through time a new draft of history is created.

If the show ends now if will be a great shame. I guess we will hear in the next few weeks.

Terminator: TSSC Episode 2.21

Holy crap!

The episode opens with the gang at a potter's field where there are a lot of headstones reading simply 1984. Kyle Reese must be buried here. Sarah tells Derek that she doesn't trust him.

John produces a mobile phone he took from one of the coverall guys last week and on it is a photo of Weaver's daughter. John recognises her from the child psychologist's office.

A terminator arrives at Weaver's house to either abduct or kill the girl. (Is he part of the coverall guy conspiracy, or are they rivals?) Cromartie sees the whole thing on CCTV and gives instructions over the phone to keep the girl away from the terminator.

Sarah and the gang turn up to rescue the girl. Derek gets shot in the head.

Just like that.

Derek's dead.

No big heroic death scene. No goodbyes. Shot in the head by a terminator.

Holy crap! Not many TV shows would do that.

The gang escape and hide out. Cromartie tells Ellison that Sarah Connor took the girl. Ellison phones Sarah and arranges a meet. Sarah wants to talk to Weaver.

Meanwhile John talks to the girl. She describes her friend John Henry who lives in the basement and has a cable in his head. John realises it's a terminator and confirms it's Cromartie by showing the girl a photo of the actor Lazlo. Sara still wants to meet Weaver.

Cameron tells John that Sarah wanted Charley to look after him. She makes a remark that Sarah is loosing weight.

They arrange a meet in a cinema. Ellison takes the girl but as Sarah leaves the cops show up and capture her. Sarah fights to the end. John and Cameron leave from another exit.

So then there are two.

Spare a thought for John. Riley is killed. Charley is killed. Derek is terminated. And now his mother is captured.

The closing shot is the potter's field with a new headstone simply marked 2009.

One episode to go.

Terminator: TSCC Episode 2.20

OK, we're really getting near the end of the season now, and perhaps the end of the series as I've read the show may not be getting a third season.

This one is a pretty character driven episode until near the end when STUFF STARTS HAPPENING!

The gang pack up their belongings and hit the road. Sarah and John end up in a sort of funky lighthouse place. Someone already lives here because there's a friendly dog. Who could it be? Charley Dixon walks in, you know, Sarah's old boyfriend from1999. Turns out he's the one living there. It is implied that Sarah set this up but they've not seen each other since Penny from Lost got assassinated by Cromartie.

Speaking of Cromartie/John Henry... He's playing a game with weaver's daughter. the kid wants her ducks to be part of the game but Cromartie tells her the ducks aren't covered by the rules of the game. The girl suggests he changes the rules. This causes him to do some sort of reboot and for a while it loks like he's going into terminator emulation mode.

A scientist guy runs in and hits the power off button. Scientist guy tells Weaver and Ellison that malware was downloaded into Cromartie and according to the comments in the file it was written by Myles Dyson of Terminator 2 fame.

When Cromartie is turned on again he claims that there is another computer like him on the Internet - his "brother".

Back at the funky lighthouse place Sarah tells Charley that she wants him to look after John. In a wordless scene she takes his hand and puts in on her breast. Charley is confuses and then realises he feels a lump. She tells him that she was supposed to die in 2005 and maybe that will still happen, albeit delayed because she skipped forward eight years.

Sarah goes to a doctor to check the lump. The doctor says a cyst has formed around a metal implant. Sarah immediately assumes its a transmitter put there by three dot warehouse dream guy and uses a defibrillator to zap it.

Then STUFF STARTS HAPPENING!

Men in coveralls converge on three locations: Sarah at the doctor's, John and Charley at the funky lighthouse place and Cameron and Derek in a SUV.

Cameron and Derek have a tire blowout and Derek investigates a mysterious van following them. He gets captured but not before Cameron sees that the van belongs to the port authority. She follows them to the port and walks in to a big dark corridor that has "trap" written all over it. She gets doused in water and then zapped by electricity. The coverall guy is on the phone getting instructions (from Cromartie's brother?) on how to remove her chip. Cameron wakes up and stops coverall guy and then rescues Derek.

John and Charley are attacked by more coverall men. They run to the dock and have a gun battle. John is untying the boat while Charley covers him. We don't see if they escape.

Sarah has a battle in the hospital with her own coverall guy and zaps his head with the defibrillator. (Nicely done Sarah! Bonus points for innovative use of medical equipment.) She heads back to the funky lighthouse place to see the body of a coverall guy. Down on the dock the boat is gone but she sees a deceased Charley floating in the water with bullet wounds in the shape of three dots in his chest.

Two episodes to go! And I but lots of STUFF is HAPPENING in them too!

Terminator: TSCC Episode 2.19

This episode continues the "Captain Queeg" storyline from last week. It turns out to be quite a talky episode, but in a good way.

In the present John asks Derek how long he would last in a fight against Cameron without weapons. Derek agrees that if Cameron wants someone dead then they are dead.

John goes to "Kendra's", sorry Jessie's, hotel room and draws a gun on her. He tells her not to pretend that she doesn't know him. He gets her to admit she killed Riley and then decides to let her go. She asks if he would have deactivated Cameron if he believed she killed Riley. He says no. "Then it's a damn shame," says Jessie.

Derek is waiting for Jessie downstairs. He explains how he killed Andy Good in the present even though they were like brothers in the future. He says he doesn't think that this Jessie is "his" Jessie. She runs. He raises his gun and appears to pull the trigger.

There's just a little bit of Cromartie in this one. He is painting model figurines. Later he reveals to Weaver that he knows about former employees who have "resigned" but have not appeared since. He says he found a "resignation letter" for Ellison in Weaver's computer system.

In the flashbacks to 2027 we see the repercussions of the mysterious box being taken onto the submarine. Queeg won't reveal what is in the box. One of the sailors is disgusted that the metal have made their way into every aspect of the resistance. He wonder's who is running the war.

Later some of the crew break into the box. A T-100 kills one and takes their form before vanishing into the sub. Jessie wants to search but Queeg overrules her. Tensions run high and members of the crew accuse Jessie of being metal.

Queeg kills a dissenter and Jessie resolves to take over the ship. She shoots queeg in the head and abandons the sub. Just before boarding the escape pod the T-1000 appears to Jessie and passes on a message for John Connor. The answer is 'no'. Jessie and the crew escape and we also see the liquid metal machine escape.

Back at base Jessie is being debriefed by Cameron. Jessie wants to give the message to John in person but Cameron insists that telling her is the same thing. Jessie realises that the sailor was maybe right about the metal running the show. She tells Cameron the answer was no. Cameron tells her that the question was "Will you join us?" Does this imply that there is a rogue grouping of machines out of Skynet control. Was the T-1000 the one that would become Weaver?

Cameron also reveals that Jesse has lost the baby she was carrying during the mission on the sub. So all in all this episode does go some way to explaining why Jessie was so focused on getting Cameron away from John Connor. She believes that she is the only one who can see what a danger Cameron and the metal have become.

Terminator: TSSC Episode 2.18

In this week's episode the death of Riley has repercussions and we see the return of Cromartie, Ellison and Weaver.

"Kendra" is visibly injured after her fight with Riley so she goes to a bar and picks a fight to explain her wounds.

Sarah is packing her stuff for a move while chatting to a neighbour. The neighbour just happens to mention that her boyfriend the cop had to deal with a murder and goes on to describe Riley's distinguishing marks just so Sarah can find out Riley was killed.

Sarah goes to tell John. Finding John with Cameron Sarah tells the machine to leave the room. Cameron steps outside and sees a bid fly away. Summer Glau then gets the funniest line of the episode: "Goodbye bird. There was a 51% chance I wouldn't have killed you."

Sara believes that Cameron killed Riley. John wants to believe she didn't. When Derek gets the news he tells "Kendra". She replies that maybe some "good" can come of it and John will destroy Cameron. Derek is not impressed with her attitude, but he probably agrees.

Sarah discovers Cameron's stash of spare parts and burns them.

Later John goes to look at Riley's body. He sees her wounds and appears to work out that Cameron could not be responsible.

Elsewhere Weaver's little girl wants to play hide-and-seek. Cromartie lures her to his basement room and offers to play. She goes missing. Later Ellison and Weaver have to play a guessing game to find her. Weaver is impressed with what "John Henry" is learning. Ellison is not. After they find the girl in a helicopter on the roof he gives Cromartie a good talking to about placing the girl in danger.

A series of "flashbacks" to 2027 show a mission on the submarine that "Kendra" once mentioned. The "metal" captain uses unorthodox methods to escape attack from a Skynet machine called a Kraken. "Kendra" then realises that they are 300 miles off course.

The captain (called Queeg after the captain in The Caine Mutiny) says he is on a secret mission for John Connor. They are to pick up a package. Eventually they get the package from some other terminators. It is a mysterious metal box. What can be in it?

The episode ends with a "to be continued", but in the "next time" preview we can see a liquid metal T-1000 come out of the mysterious box and attack the crew of the sub. So was it a secret mission for John Connor, or was it a trick by the terminators?

Another good episode, although this one does feel like build-up.

Terminator: TSSC Episode 2.17

Episode 17 already? There can't be many left!

OK, we are back on track with this episode after the oddness of going down the rabbit hole in the "memorial" episode and the "sleep clinic" interlude. This is a strong episode that relies on some character-driven suspense.

The episode opens with Cameron finding a bird in the living room. "What am I going to do with you?" she wonders. She takes the bird outside but her hand malfunctions and crushes it.

Cameron and John work on her arm using spare parts from other endoskeletons.

Sarah wants to get to the bottom of the Riley suicide attempt and visits the foster dad. He mentions her ranting about the world burning and bleached skulls. He suggests that Sarah's gang are not a good influence on Riley. He also mentions talking to a 'guidance counselor'. I bet that was 'Kendra', I thought.

It was indeed. Sarah meets the fake guidance counselor and discusses the Riley situation. 'Kendra' insinuates that uncle Derek was doing bad things in order to get him to leave Sarah's gang.

Back at the house Sarah and John are confronting Riley when a real child services person turns up. Riley goes to hide in the garage. While John displays knowledge of gun permits Cameron enters the garage. "What am I going to do with you?" she wonders. =gulp= "You're John's sister," pleads a worried Riley. We all know better. John enters and gets Riley out before Cameron does anything nasty.

John asks if there is anything Riley wants to tell him because today is the day. She asks him the same thing. They both say no and they part.

Riley goes back to 'Kendra'. She accuses 'Kendra' of wanting her to be killed by Cameron. Eventually they fight. And what a fight scene! Riley gets the upper hand before 'Kendra' shoots her. Riley dies.

You know, I didn't like Riley much to start with but by the end she became one of the most interesting characters. It was never going to end well for her, poor thing!

Cameron tells John that she will eventually malfunction and become unreliable and she gives him a self destruct device to blow up her chip when the time comes. Summer Glau does a good job showing Cameron's increasing erratic nature.

All in all a strong episode with good character moments.

Terminator: TSCC Episode 2.16

OK, bit of a weird episode this. At first I felt like I had missed an episode before seeing this one.

There are two storylines juxtaposed in this episode. (Hey, I never get to use the word "juxtaposed" so I'm gonna use it now.)

One story has Sarah check in to a sleep deprivation clinic. (Yes, that's right. An exciting hour of entertainment awaits.) She meets a roommate who has nightmares about being burnt to death as a witch. John visits and alludes to Sarah's nightmares where she is help captive in the back of a van.

A Cute Nurse Lady tells Sarah that she doesn't have a brain tumor responsible for keeping her awake. In another scene Cameron walks past John in her underwear. I'm pointing this out for a storytelling reason, honest!

Each night when Sarah goes to sleep in the clinic she dreams/flashes back to being captured by the guy she shot in the warehouse factory place. He wants to know who she is, who she is working with and what they want. He also implies that he assassinated the Woman With the Deep Manly Voice and the hypnotherapist from the "UFO" episode.

Back in the clinic the roommate burns to death in her bed and Sarah investigates. She and John break into the basement where it appears the Cute Nurse Lady is a terminator and running an experiment on human brain activity for skynet. (Huh?)

Back in the van dream Sarah eventually manages to break free and sticks a syringe her captors eye. (Ew!)

Then, the big twist, Sarah realises that being stuck in the van is real and the clinic is a dream. She eventually shoots her captor in the head. Well, that's what was implied. So after going through the angst of killing someone and then finding out he was alive she kills him again.

OK, if the clinic was a dream does that mean that Sarah is still worried about having a brain tumor? And why did she dream of Cameron in her undies? You see, I told you there was a storytelling reason for mentioning Summer Glau in her undies. It must mean something!

To be honest I sort of saw the "twist" coming. Nothing about the clinic storyline made sense but it makes a lot more sense as a dream.

By the way, the Cute Nurse Lady was played by Julie Ann Emery.

Terminator: TSSC Episode 2.15

This episode had a weird Alice in Wonderland feel, at least for me.

Sarah and the gang go to investigate the people who Weaver killed in the mysterious warehouse. There is a memorial service for the victims. Also there is a investigator man working for Weaver. He is looking for someone.

Sarah talks to the wife of the man she shot. But she does not seem to know what went on in the warehouse. The parent company has paid for flowers but sent no representatives.

John befriends a gal whose father died in the warehouse. Later the gang realise that the girl and her mother are acting strangely and they work out that her father is not actually dead.

Sara finds a secret monitoring room under a house. All the families who had someone working at the warehouse are being monitored. Derek says this is how Skynet worked/will work in the future. They find footage of the man Sarah killed and the missing father assassinating a family and disposing of the bodies.

At the end of the episode they find the body of the investigator man. A "three dot" drone appears, hovers and then flies off. It lands in the back of a truck driven by the missing father/assassin.

Terminator: TSCC Episode 2.14

Sarah wakes up in hospital with a gunshot wound from the last episode. Kyle Reese turns up in her head speaking lines of dialog from the first movie. "On your feet, soldier!" There's a cop outside the door so she has to knock him out to escape. She kidnaps a lady doctor to fix her leg. In a motel she tells lady doctor about how a man hurt her and about her son John.

Riley is in hospital because she tried to kill herself. I guess it's a different hospital because John doesn't visit his mom. "Kendra" takes Riley away and tells her off, but without slapping her this time.

Derek has a mission to destroy any evidence from Sarah's most recent mission. He burns her jeep which is at a police station. One of the cops is Trip from Enterprise. Coincidentally he's an abusive boyfriend of the lady doctor.

The Cromartie storyline seems to be going somewhere. Cromartie is playing with toy figures and asks Ellison why God didn't use ball-and-socket joints for human limbs. He calmly recounts the history of his body, listing the many victims such as the plastic surgeon and the FBI agents.

Later Cromartie tells Weaver that he knows she is not human and also how he has been tracking production of Coltan, the alloy used in constructing the machines. He intercepted a call to destroy evidence in the warehouse that Sarah found. Weaver sets off and chillingly assassinates all the human workers in the warehouse.

The doctor patches Sarah up and shoots her former boyfriend in a standoff. Sarah and Derek head off to the warehouse only to see it in flames.

Terminator: TSCC Episode 2.13

The main storyline this week involves Sarah going to a UFO convention to pick up any hints of terminator technology. She hears about a mysterious guy who put photos of some advanced drone aircraft (that kind of have a "three dot" design) on a blog and then stopped posting.

A woman with a deep manly voice offers to tell Sarah more about the photos. They go to the mobile home that the woman with the deep manly voice lives in. It turns out that the woman with the deep manly voice is actually a man in disguise and now living off the grid. He worked on the drones for a company but as he was driven there in a van with blacked-out windows he doesn't know where it is.

Sarah takes the man (disguised as a woman with a deep manly voice) to a hypnotherapist to remember what he can about the journey in the van. Sarah records the session using a cell phone. Suddenly there are gunshots. The man and the therapist have both been assassinated. But Sarah has enough information on tape to lead her to a warehouse outside of town.

Inside is a guy who claims no knowledge of what goes on on the warehouse. He says he just rents it out. But when Sarah lowers her gun he produces one and wounds her. In the struggle the man gets killed. Sarah crawls outside and sees a "three dot" drone hovering.

This episode also contains a flashback where Riley and "Kendra" travel back from the future to the present on their mission to stop John depending too much on Cameron. (Why do I think there's more to it than that?) When Riley wants out "Kendra" slaps her and tells her to suck it up.

Ellison plays chess with "John Henry" (Cromartie). He doesn't seem convinced that the machine is benign. Very wise I think...

Saturday, 21 February 2009

Terminator: TSSC Episode 2.12

Three stories for the price of one this week. In the "present" Sarah sends Derek to meet up with a gal who's (soon to be deceased) pregnant mother is injured. Terminators were after the family. Derek remembers the gal in a bio-hazard suit in the future.

"6 months ago" Sarah and Cameron meet the family for the first time. A terminator has targeted the family and they don't know why. At first they think it's because the father has some shady dealings with a firm connected with cybernetics technology. Later Sarah discovers that the wife is pregnant and the machine wants to stop the child from being born.

In the "future" Derek meets "Kendra Shaw" for the first time. (That's the name of the character the actress played in BSG so I'm sticking with it here!) We discover that she arrived on a nuclear sub that the humans use to travel between Perth and LA. The sub uses a "metal" captain.

Derek and "Kendra" are looking for the sole survivor from a terminator bio-warfare attack. One girl called Sydney survived because of a natural immunity. This lets the humans develop an antidote to the bio agent.

It turns out that Sydney is the newborn sister of the woman he's protecting in the present.

In the future "Kendra" also relates the happy story of how bunnies were accidentally introduced to Australia and many attempts were made to wipe them out including using a deadly bunny virus. The bunnies lived on which is perhaps a good omen for humans in the future!

In the present Derek tells the gal and her new baby sister Sydney that they can join the gang, however the gal takes off while he phones Sarah with an update.

Terminator: TSSC Episode 2.11

A change of pace in this week's episode. The story mainly focuses on what Cameron does during nights. (She "doesn't sleep".)

It turns out she has "befriended" a wheelchair-bound guy who works nights in some records office. He lets her in at night to do research in return for glazed donuts.

While there she spots a T-888 model in a photograph taken in the 1920s. Cameron does some research and discovers that the terminator arrived in the 1920s by mistake. His appearance inadvertently caused a speakeasy to burn down and a young architect died. The architect was supposed to design a particular building necessary to the terminator's plans so the machine has to become involved in building it himself!

After the building is completed the terminator disappears from history. Cameron figures it out and goes to the building. She has a flashback to the new years celebrations for 2010 (which obviously hasn't happened yet) and "sees" the Governor get assassinated. She finds the 1920s terminator behind a bricked-up wall clutching a tommy gun. She fights and defeats the other machine.

There are lots of unanswered questions in this eposode. Why do the terminators want the Governor killed? How does Cameron "remember" what happened? Was she there as well?

Along the way she casually mentions to her "friend" that his tumor has returned. The next night he's not at the records office and she quickly befriends his replacement by offering her the donuts.

The B story this week concerns John and Riley doing teenage stuff.

Terminator TSSC Episode 2.10

And so normal service is resumed. After a long wait Terminator The Sarah Connor Chronicles returned to Virgin 1 last night.

Ellison dreams about digging up Cromartie. He wakes up to find Cameron checking his garden for the missing terminator.

Sarah has decided that the three dots means something. The gang finds a new company working on AI that use three dots as the logo. John studies the hard drives they steal and says the company has a design but needs money to implement it.

Derek confronts his gal from the future when he finds her surveillance photos of the gang. She tells him that future John is making bad choices because of his close relationship with Cameron. Future gal came back to keep an eye on John. Derek obviously has doubts about Cameron also.

The child physiologist who was helping Weaver with her AI dies in the lab. Ellison questions the AI and decides that it's amoral and doesn't know the difference between right and wrong.

Sarah poses as wealthy "Sarah Gale" and offers money to the three dot company to buy a Japanese chip they need. Eventually she realises that the three dot guy has tricked her and kicks the crap out of him before recovering the money.

(Notice the name "Gale" as in Gale Anne Hurd, the producer of The Terminator movie. I bet "Weaver" is named after Sigourney Weaver from James Cameron's Aliens and "Ellison" is named for Harlan Ellison the SF author. "Cameron" needs no explanation.)

The big shock of the episode its that John's gal Riley is from the future! She came back with Derek's gal to befriend John. Riley seems to be cracking up and wants out. This isn't going to end well.

At the end of the episode Ellison is brought by Weaver to meet "John Henry", the AI. It's Cromartie! Back! I saw it coming, but still... Cromartie! Back!

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles 2.9

This will be my last review for a while because Virgin 1 are not showing the next episode until February 2009.

I will call this episode The One With Toby From The West Wing.

Another strong episode following on from last week. Sarah throws up (from radiation sickness?) and stays at home to recover while John and Cameron go to dig up and destroy Cromartie's body. They discover that the body is gone. Ellison was the only one who knew so they go to talk to him/beat it out of him. Ellison convinces John that he doesn't know what happened the body and John believes him.

Sarah has disturbing fever dreams of baby turtles and goes to talk to the therapist guy from a few episodes ago. A pattern of three dots keeps coming up and she wonders what it means.

The main storyline concerns Derek and his lady friend who has captured "Toby" from The West Wing. She is convinced that he is a collaborator from the future who tortured Derek for the benefit of the machines. Derek has no memory of this but is convinced after she also captures the younger version of "Toby" from the present. She assassinates older "Toby".

There's some lovely time travel twisty stuff going on here. Derek has no memory of being tortured and suggests that maybe her version of Derek was tortured in another timeline that formed after "our" Derek changed something in the present/past.

Also the younger "Toby" goes into work and gets arrested by the FBI. His biometrics (fingerprints) were logged in and when the computers at work were hacked into. He realises it was the future "Toby" and obviously they don't believe his story. He ends up being locked up for something his future self has done. And it was being stuck in prison that let the machines get him... Bummer.

Ellison meets Weaver and shows her Cromartie's body in the trunk of his car. (What?!! Ellison DID take the body!!!) He says they need to know how the machines work. (Will Weaver fix Cromartie?!!)

Sara realises the three dots were written on the wall of the basement in the blood of the future resistance fighter. But what do they mean?

I'll have to wait until February to find out. I must say I am really enjoying this show.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles 2.8

Or "What we did on our vacation in Mexico".

A very strong episode this week, partly because of the novelty of the "multiple viewpoint" story structure, partly because the Cromartie storyline has come to a head.

John and his gal take off for Mexico without telling anyone. Just as well they did because Cromartie turns up at house looking for John. He found out the gang was there from the guy in the bowling alley last week.

John is showing his gal a place where he grew up. A photographer takes their photo an wants to sell them a picture, perhaps in a nod to the ending of the original movie. he also recognises "John Connor". John gets into a shuffle with the man and the cops turn up. They put his name in the system and Cromartie is alerted. he drives to Mexico with Sarah in the trunk of the car.

There is a big gun battle with Cromartie shooting lots of cops. initially we only hear the gun battle from Sarah's viewpoint in the trunk of the car. but this is not a budget saving exercise. later we see Cromartie in action.

Derek, Cameron and agent Ellison also turn up. Ellison wants to help and leads Cromartie into a church where Cromartie is ambushed. The effects work of Cromartie's damaged head is outstanding for a TV show.

They bury the body and promise to come back and destroy it. Sarah takes Cromartie's chip and smashes it. Lena does a good job of showing Sarah trying to exorcise her anger and fear.

So is Cromartie gone for good?

Saturday, 6 December 2008

Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles 2.7

Right, this episode is "the one with the bowling alley".

There is another creepy opening sequence. This show is good at those! This time Ellison answers his door to see... Himself! A duplicate terminator Ellison is about to kill him when Cromartie shows up and destroys the duplicate. He is still convinced that Ellison will lead him to the Connors.

Later Ellison gets arrested for a man's murder. It transpires that the duplicate appeared and killed a man for his clothes and was witnessed. The way it is described makes me think that a sequence was at least written and perhaps filmed but then cut from the episode.

The Conner gang's house gets broken into. Not only have the diamonds been taken but the id papers are gone as well. This is Not Good. The gang goes to Derek's fence and leaves John to clean up.

Cromartie gets a lead on Cameron (from when she lost her memory) and goes to the half-way house. The bad girl that hung out with Cameron says she will help Cromartie look for her to get some payback. They just miss John and his gal at the supermarket. Later Cromartie ditches the whiny bad girl and makes it to the "Baum" house. John's gal convinces Cromartie that she lives there.

The gang eventually find the burglars and get their stuff back. Cameron shoots them dead in a bowling alley. Sarah is shocked but does not protest. She finds the fourth burglar hading and makes the mistake of letting them go free. later we see Cromartie having a "chat" with the fourth burglar.

Derek's future gal kills the fence. Why?

Weaver impersonates a cop to get the witness to make a statement that includes a description of the time travel "bubble" materialising and this is enough to get Ellison released.

Another entertaining episode. I am enjoying this show a damn sight more than Heroes right now.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles Episode 2.6

I will call this episode "the one with the child therapist".

Quite a good little episode with a lot going on.

Sarah and the gang work out that the resistance fighter from the future was trying to tell them about a therapist that Skynet was interested in. But do they need protect him or stop him?

Sarah, John and Cameron pose as a family that wants some therapy so they can bug his office. To Sarah's surprise John wants to go back for an individual appointment. The therapist tells John that he is exhibiting the behaviour of a war veteran. John tries to tell the therapist that he had to kill a man (in episode 2.1) but changes his mind.

Shirley Manson gets a big chunk of screen time as Catherine Weaver in this episode. It transpires that the T-1000 has taken Weaver's place and is using her company to further the research into the Turk computer from season 1. Weaver's small child is terrified of her "mother" but is too young to express it. (Frankly Shirley Manson scared the cr*p out of me!) Weaver hears that the therapist can "fix" the child and takes her to see him.

Derek recognises a girl and follows her to a hotel. Its one of his resistance soldiers who claims to have gone AWOL and run away to hide in the "past". Later we see surveillance photos of the gang under her bed so she must be telling fibs. (I think the actress played Kendra Shaw in the "Razor" episode of Battlestar Galactica.)

A scary lady terminator arrives from the future and goes to the therapist's office just as Cameron enters. They both realise what the other is at the same time and fight with some darkly comic consequences. Cameron is victorious but the gang don't know if the lady terminator was there to kill or protect the therapist.

The Turk is exhibiting some unusual behaviour and Weaver asks the therapist to take a look at it. He realises the computer is telling a joke: "Why is a math book so sad? Because its full of problems." Weaver asks him to help her as a consultant.

A Lena Headey gets a chance to emote as she listens to John's bugged session with the therapist.

One amusing moment comes as the therapist tells Sarah that he thinks her "daughter" might have Ashbergers Syndrome.

good solid episode that moves the plot along, gives an excuse for Summer Glau to have a girl fight and explore what the never ending war is doing to john's head.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles Episode 2.5

Mmmm... Another stand-alone episode.

A new terminator has turned up with a mission to kill one of John Conner's future resistance fighters. John and Derek head off to a military academy to protect one of the possible targets. Sarah and Cameron in turn protect another target who happens to be a young boy.

Sarah takes the young boy in for the weekend while they hunt the terminator. She bonds with him and helps him write a book report on The Wizard of Oz. Seriously.

John gets enrolled at the military academy and Derek gets a job as an instructor, one assumes without references. They manage to dispatch the terminator.

Sarah puts the kid on a bus, unconcerned that he'll probably tell the cops about the crazy ladies with guns.

This episode did not have the ring of truth somehow.

Meanwhile agent Ellison investigates the terminator fight at the power plant from a couple of episodes ago. He reports back to Shirley Manson and she then cleans up loose ends behind his back.

Oh well. At least Lena Headey and Summer Glau were looking well.

No Cromartie!

Terminator The Sarah Connor Cronicles Episode 2.4

An interesting, if somewhat subdued, episode.

Lots of Cameron in this one. Yay!

Cameron looses her memory in a supermarket and seems to be having flashbacks to the past/future where she's a human and has been captured by the machines. She is being asked questions from an unseen interrogator and says her name is Alison Young.

In the present Cameron hooks up with another girl and uses the Alison back story which she seems to believe is true.

Of course it turns out that Cameron was doing the interrogating in the future and was created as a replica of Alison to infiltrate John Conner's resistance base. Interesting she claimed to be from a faction of machines that wanted peace. (But then she said that just before she snapped Alison's neck so I guess that's unlikely.)

Summer Glau does her usual great job with both parts.

In the future Cameron's base was on board an old aircraft carrier and contained other human prisoners plus some animals like a tiger and a bear. Why, I wonder...

On the minus side this episode had no Cromartie!

Agent Ellison is thinking about his job offer and checks up on Catherine Weaver.

Finally Lena Headey has a subplot where she bonds with her pregnant neighbour. Where is that storyline going?

Terminator Episode 2.3

Again, beware of spoilers.

Quite a good episode this week.

Charlie and Mrs Charlie are on the road. He's fulling the car with gas in a desert location outside LA. While he is distracted someone else gets in the car and drives off. It's Cromartie! and he's taken Mrs Charlie prisoner. (The actress playing Mrs Charlie still looks like Linda Hamilton this week.)

Charlie contacts Sarah. She and Derek go to help without telling John. They track down Mrs Charlie who it appears has been wired to explode. But its a trick. Cromartie has tapped into a nearby cell tower and is listening to the phone calls. He blows up the cell tower, disables their car and calls John using Sarah's voice and arranges to meet him at the pier.

Sarah and the others have to make their way back on foot. To make matters worse Mrs Charlie is injured.

Meanwhile John is hanging out with his gal and tries to ditch Cameron. Bad move because Cromartie is on his way. John only survives because he jumps off the pier and terminator's can't swim. Cromartie's eyes glow red as he sinks into the dark.

Sarah picks up John in a stolen cell-phone repair van. John notices there is blood in the back. We learn that Mrs Charlie is dead.

Later at the funeral Cromartie scans the crowd looking for John.

In other developments Shirley Mansion offers Ellison a job.

In an amusing subplot the actor Laslo (that Cromartie killed) is seen on TV in an awful Conan-style movie.

Lena Headey gets lots of action and angst in this episode. However there is too little of Summer Glau. Boo! But what little we see of Cameron is good.
