'She has no inhibitions at all,' the director said of the actress he will direct in the stage adaptation of Ingmar Bergman's 1961 best foreign language Oscar winner, Through A Glass Darkly.
It's about a woman caught between two worlds - one of reality and another of spiritual dimensions.
Her husband, father and brother use her, and her illness, for their own ends. 'They take what they need,' Attenborough noted. He will direct the production at the Almeida Theatre, with performances beginning June 10.
Ruth, who appeared with David Oyelowo and Benedict Cumberbatch in the small gem that was Small Island on BBC TV, went with Attenborough to Sweden last summer to perform in a workshop production of Through A Glass Darkly. Later in the year, Ruth will be seen opposite Idris Elba (from The Wire) in another BBC TV offering, the thriller Luther.
