Small Island part 1 was broadcast on Sunday night. It was a solid piece of work and if the two lead actresses are not nominated for everything next year I will be very surprised. I am looking forward to part 2 next Sunday.

The RUTH WILSON Appreciation Society on facebook reports the broadcast dates for Small Island are December 6th and December 13th, 9:00pm on BBC 1.

The new version of The Prisoner has been just been shown in America. No news yet on when ITV will show it but in the meantime there is a lot of content over at http://www.amctv.com/originals/the-prisoner/.

I'm quite a fan of the original so I'll be interested to see what they have done with the new show. I have noticed that the episode titles are one-word titles based on the some of the original ones.

Ruth Wilson's Small Island NI Shoot

I found an article today about the filming of Small Island earlier this year in Belfast and Dublin. I had been wondering what locations they were using and this article answers the question.

With varied locations, shooting facilities and crew, the Northern Ireland shoot was a pleasure for the producer: “We were amazed at how fortunate we were in that we found pretty much all the locations we needed in Belfast. One of my favourite locations was a street at the back of the main shopping centre which we turned into an old-London street. It looked amazing in the fog, very atmospheric.

The only problem encountered was in recreating Georgian London houses as the red brick used in Belfast didn’t really suit the brief. Therefore, the crew moved shop to Dublin for three days to capture the look of elegant Georgian London. “It was tricky to find a street that would look like war-torn Georgian London,” says Vicky, “but then we found Great Queen Street in Dublin.” The interiors needed were created in Belfast’s studio the Paint Hall.

The article goes on to report that the BBC is expected to broadcast Small Island in December.

Ruth Wilson in Sunday Telegraph magazine

I'm in the habit of checking the magazines that are included with newspapers on Saturdays and Sundays. Sometimes it pays off as it did this morning. Today's Sunday Telegraph magazine came with a Ruth Wilson cover and four page article.

The article covers most of Ruth's work paying special attention to Capturing Mary and A Real Summer. The Prisoner's "difficult" shoot and Small Island also get name-checked as does Ruth's continuing theater work.

Small Island tie-in cover plus broadcast date

This week sees the publication of the Small Island tie-in edition and a cover has finally turned up online. As I hoped Ruth Wilson is on the cover. In fact the cover image mirrors the photo on the earlier editions but this time substitutes the actresses. So here's the cover:


The tie-in book was officially published on 17 September 2009 and Amazon UK seems to have the best price at the moment.


According to today's Times newspaper Small Island will be on the BBC in "early November". Also Jane Austen's Emma will be on in "early October".

Late August Trivia

I thought I would do an update covering all the random trivia that I don't want to cover individually.

Summer television is usually a bit rubbish as there is rarely anything new on. However the BBC broke this trend to give us the six-part Desperate Romantics which ended last night. At first I wasn't too sure if I would be interested in the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood but the show turned out to be good fun and I quite enjoyed it's irreverence.

Special mention must be made of Amy Manson who played the tragic Lizzie Siddal and Jennie Jacques who played Annie Miller. I had never seen either of those actresses before and I was completely won over by them.

It looks like the DVD will be out next month.

Wuthering Heights finally crawls onto TV here after what has become the normal ITV delay. The new issue of the TV Times does the requisite swooning over Tom Hardy and proclaims the show a "staggering success".

Ruth Wilson will be back on the BBC in Small Island which I have mentioned before once or twice. I believe it will be on soon.

I went to see GI Joe in the cinema, mainly because Rachel Nichols is in it. When I got there the showing was canceled for technical reasons. I've not got around to going again. Not much of an anecdote but it give me an excuse to include a photo of Rachel as Scarlett.

A new move of Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray is imminent and Penguin have put out a new edition of the novel with the movie art. I mention it because Rebecca Hall is on the cover. If you look closely you can just make her out.


Finally I have got to mention the Star Trek DVD on the German Amazon site. It comes in a box shaped as the USS Enterprise! You open up the saucer section to get at the disks! How cool is that!

Ruth Wilson might have attracted attention playing Jane Eyre in the BBC’s 2006 adaptation of the dark, Victorian novel, but the 27-year-old actress is keen to prove her abilities extend beyond the small screen. In July, Wilson will take on the iconic role of Stella Kowalski in “A Streetcar Named Desire” at London’s Warehouse Theater. She’ll star alongside Rachel Weisz as Blanche DuBois, and Elliot Cowan, who plays Stanley Kowalski. “It’s such a brutal play, full of passion [and] violence,” says Wilson. “With theater, you have that adrenaline kick — you’ve only got you, your voice and that’s it, so it’s quite scary. But I like scaring myself.”

QUICK STUDY: A former history student, Wilson researches her roles thoroughly. The actress took a road trip around America’s Deep South to prep for the part, taking in South Carolina, Mississippi and New Orleans. “New Orleans is an incredible place. You can understand why Tennessee Williams wrote about it,” says Wilson. “It’s got music coming out of every corner.”

SMALL SCREEN: Wilson hasn’t left her television roots behind. The actress will play Queenie in “Small Island,” a BBC adaptation of the Andrea Levy novel set in post-World War II London, which will make its debut on British screens in the fall. She also shot a remake of the Sixties spy show “The Prisoner,” with Sir Ian McKellen and Hayley Atwell. “It’s quite weird,” says Wilson. “We all have numbers rather than names. To some people it will make no sense, to other people it will be some kind of philosophical story.”

BIG PLANS: Frustrated by what she sees as a lack of compelling roles for women, Wilson says she’s working on putting on a film festival for female writers with Atwell and Emma Thompson. “Producers [say] women don’t bring in the money,” says Wilson. “That’s the aim of the festival: for writers to start improving women’s roles. And not to write boring dramas…[but] action movies and genre movies.” The actress also says she plans to direct films of her own at some point. “It’s probably a bit about control, actually,” says Wilson with a laugh. “Wanting to know from start to finish what the hell’s going on.”

Small Island to wrap in NI

Here's a Small Island production update:

Filming will wrap this week on ‘Small Island’, a new 2 x 90-minute drama produced by Ruby Films for the BBC which has been shooting in Northern Ireland since mid February. The production will move to Jamaica at the end of this week.

Ruth Wilson in Small Island, another update

The Jamaica Information Service has a piece on the production of Ruth Wilson's new project, Small Island:

The programme will be aired on BBC 1 television as part of its Autumn line- up. Much of the filming will be in Dublin and Belfast, but some 10 days will be spent filming in Jamaica at the end March to the beginning of April.

Ruth Wilson in Small Island update

I've posted this on my Ruth Wilson page (http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/chevron/ruthwilson) and I thought I would post it here as well. There is a little bit of news on the Ruth's next TV project, Small Island

Watch out for... David Oyelowo, Naomie Harris, Benedict Cumberbatch and Ruth Wilson, who lead the TV drama based on Andrea Levy's novel Small Island. The drama has a series of intertwining tales about Jamaican Gilbert Joseph, who joins the RAF and fights for Britain during WWII. Later, his wife Hortense joins him in the UK. 'Gilbert tries to settle in Britain after the war and it's like: "Oh, are you still here?" That's the sense he gets from the Brits, even though he was in the war,' Mr Oyelowo told me during a break from rehearsals. Filming begins next week on locations in Belfast and London.

Interesting. That seems to confirm that she's finished work on the remake of The Prisoner, due on ITV later this year.

Ruth Wilson in BBC adaptation of Andrea Levy's Small Island

I've just been told about this so I thought I would stick it here first.

One of my favorite actresses, Ruth Wilson, has been cast in a BBC drama adaptation of Andrea Levy's WW2-era novel Small Island. Here's the BBC press release:

Ruth has been a favorite of mine since her stunning performance in Jane Eyre in 2006. At the moment she's in the remake of 1960s classic The Prisoner.
